About the Podcast

I Always Wanted To is a series of interviews with people who are doing (or teaching) things that other people (or I) have always wanted to do.

The things might be exciting— like parasailing, or cave diving, or creative like painting or writing or playing an instrument. They might be subjects I’ve always wanted to understand like sound engineering or why Hip Hop is so popular. My rule of thumb is “do I find it interesting?” And what I’ve discovered is that when people talk about what they love their stories are compelling.

My guests aren’t celebrities. They’re regular folks sharing how they went about following their passion and the resources they found helpful. My intention is to demonstrate that you don’t have to have special qualities or circumstances to go after what you’ve always wanted, and success comes in many forms.

About the Host

I Always Wanted To Podcast - Liz Sumner

When I was an undergrad in Journalism school at the University of Oregon I longed to be Phil Donahue. I wanted cool people to come sit on my couch and I’d interview them and warm the hearts of my audience.

I never pursued being a talk show host. I moved on to other interests and degrees. I lived in the Pacific Northwest, then New England, and now central Italy.

One passion that has stuck with me is music. I’ve been singing since I was a small child– first around the kitchen table with my sisters as my father played they autoharp. That’s where I developed an amazing ability to harmonize. I married a brilliant songwriter and we play his music in a band called Complicated People. I’m also fortunate to sing with a jazz orchestra and perform in a 17th century opera house. My listeners share my interest in music– they are by far the most popular episodes.

Podcasting brings together many of my gifts and pleasures. I love talking with people about what lights them up. I love taking the raw conversation and shaping it into a well-crafted episode. I love learning about new subjects and specialized topics. And I’m a tech geek– I love putting it all together.

It is my pleasure to share these stories with you. I would love to hear what you think. Are you moved? Inspired? Curious? Tell me what direction you want to go. Let me know the questions I should have asked.

What have you always wanted to try?
